MSA has partnered with Colours of Redbridge to deliver an inspiring 8-week storytelling course aimed at engaging women from different ethnic backgrounds. The project invited participants to explore and share stories of local places around Ilford through photography and creative writing.
Facilitated by three talented community artists, the course included:
• 4 photography workshops
• 2 photography walks
• 2 creative writing sessions
• A celebratory community picnic with a pop-up exhibition in Valentines Park
Nyla Sammons led two photography walks through Valentines Park and Ilford Lane where participants photographed local people and landmarks while learning about the area’s architecture and community projects.
Sylvie Belbouab facilitated a series of photography workshops, guiding participants in developing their photography skills and exploring collage techniques. She also curated the final exhibition.
Shazea Quraishi delivered two powerful creative writing sessions, encouraging participants to reflect on their personal connections to Ilford and its community spaces.
The project culminated in the creation of a series of postcards showcasing the participants’ work which will be distributed across Redbridge in August.
The photographs will also be exhibited at SPACE, Ilford in October.
“It’s been incredible to hear the discussions around different places across Redbridge, and then see those unique perspectives come to life through photography and creative writing. “I’ve really enjoyed listening to participants share their experiences and explain how they feel connected to specific locations. It’s been a truly empowering and thoughtful process, and I feel honoured to have witnessed it.” – Imogen Patel, Community Engagement Officer – Colours of Redbridge.
